Arbalou Senior – Senior Horse Supplement for Vitality, Mobility and Digestive Support

Arbalou Senior is a pelleted supplement designed to complement the nutritional needs of older horses. Combining selected herbs, algae, vitamins and trace elements, it supports everyday vitality, normal muscle function, mobility and digestive balance.

Its apple-flavoured pellets are easy to incorporate into your senior horse’s daily feeding routine, including for horses living at pasture.

Selected Herbs for Senior Horse Nutrition

Fenugreek – Complementary Protein and Nutrients

Fenugreek contains protein, minerals and other naturally occurring nutrients. It complements the formula’s nutritional support for older horses.

Maintaining muscle condition also requires sufficient protein and energy from the horse’s overall diet, alongside appropriate activity.

Chaste Tree – A Selected Botanical Ingredient

Chaste tree, also known as vitex, forms part of the botanical blend in Arbalou Senior.

It should not be considered a substitute for veterinary management of hormonal conditions such as pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), commonly called equine Cushing’s disease.

White Willow and Meadowsweet – Traditional Botanicals

White willow and meadowsweet are included in the botanical blend selected for senior horses.

Meadowsweet also contains naturally occurring flavonoids and tannins. These ingredients complement the formula without replacing veterinary care for joint discomfort or gastric concerns.

    Nettle – Naturally Occurring Minerals

Nettle provides minerals and plant compounds, contributing to the formula’s nutritional profile.

It complements a balanced feeding programme focused on normal tissue maintenance and overall well-being.

    Horsetail – A Silica-Containing Botanical

Horsetail naturally contains silica. It forms part of the combination of botanicals and mineral-rich ingredients in Arbalou Senior.

    Blackcurrant – Complementary Botanical Support

Blackcurrant contains naturally occurring polyphenols and complements the other herbs selected for this senior horse supplement.

Botanicals for Digestive and Liver Support

Arbalou Senior includes a varied botanical blend to complement nutritional support for normal digestion and liver and kidney function.

    Artichoke

Artichoke leaf contains naturally occurring bitter compounds, including cynarin. It is traditionally used in botanical preparations intended to support digestive function.

    Dandelion

Dandelion complements the blend’s focus on digestion and the body’s natural elimination processes.

    Black Radish and Fumitory

Black radish and fumitory are selected botanical components of the formula, traditionally associated with digestive support.

    Milk Thistle

Milk thistle contains silymarin, a group of plant compounds widely studied in relation to liver function.

It complements the formula’s nutritional approach to supporting older horses.

    Boldo, Orthosiphon and Goldenrod

Boldo, orthosiphon and goldenrod complete the botanical blend intended to complement support for normal digestive and elimination functions.

Algae and Nutrients for Everyday Vitality

Spirulina – Protein and Complementary Nutrients

Spirulina provides protein, amino acids and naturally occurring nutrients. It contributes to the nutritional variety of Arbalou Senior.

The amount supplied by a supplement complements, rather than replaces, the protein and energy provided by the daily ration.

Lithothamnion – A Natural Source of Calcium

Lithothamnion is a calcareous marine alga that naturally provides calcium. Calcium contributes to normal bone maintenance and muscle function.

    Fish Oils

Fish oils provide dietary fat and fatty acids, complementing the nutritional profile of the formula.

    Vitamin E – Antioxidant Support

Vitamin E contributes to antioxidant protection, helping protect cell membranes from oxidative damage. It also supports normal muscle and immune function.

    Copper

Copper contributes to normal iron metabolism and connective tissue formation, and plays a role in coat pigmentation.

    Zinc

Zinc supports normal skin and immune function, protein synthesis and the maintenance of coat and hoof quality.

    Iron

Iron is an essential component of haemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood.

Recognising Changing Needs in an Older Horse

Horses age at different rates. Workload, dental condition, individual history and daily management all influence their needs.

    Changes worth monitoring include:

    • Reduced appetite.

    • Difficulty chewing or dropping feed.

    • Loss of body weight or muscle condition.

    • Changes in movement or willingness to exercise.

    • Changes in coat, drinking habits or general behaviour.

These changes should not automatically be attributed to age. Veterinary assessment and regular dental checks help identify the cause and guide an appropriate feeding programme.

Choosing a Supplement for a Senior Horse

A senior horse supplement should complement the horse’s forage, feed and individual nutritional requirements.

Review the complete diet to ensure it provides:

    • Adequate digestible fibre and energy.

    • Sufficient protein and essential amino acids.

    • Appropriate vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

    • A feed texture suited to the horse’s chewing ability.

    • Reliable access to clean drinking water.

Arbalou Senior and Arbalou Phyto Senior offer different botanical and nutritional approaches. Select the formula according to its composition, feeding instructions and your horse’s needs.

Daily Management for Senior Horse Well-Being

A supplement works alongside consistent care. Support your older horse with:

    • Regular veterinary and dental checks.

    • Appropriate hoof care.

    • Suitable exercise adapted to its condition.

    • Gradual dietary changes.

    • Regular monitoring of weight and muscle condition.

    • Suitable shelter and additional attention during colder weather.

    Frequently Asked Questions
