Non-cancerous, sarcoid tumors may appear at the site of an insect bite, a scar, or an old wound. Generally linked to an immune system imbalance, the horse’s body begins to produce cells in an uncontrolled and excessive manner, which cluster together and form these tumors.

Although sarcoids do not pose an immediate danger to the animal’s health, their location, size, or number can become problematic for equestrian work or simply for the horse’s comfort.

The origin could be genetic but may also be viral (of bovine origin), transmitted by insects on an existing wound. It appears that a genetic predisposition combined with a wound infected by this virus is necessary for a horse to develop a sarcoid.

Where do sarcoids occur in horses ?

Although sarcoids can appear on any part of the horse’s body, they are classified into five categories depending on their location:

• Verrucous sarcoid – more frequently located around the nostrils and ears, it resembles a wart and can reach 5 to 6 centimeters in diameter.

• Fibroblastic sarcoid – in its evolving or nodular form, it usually affects the nostrils, eyelids, and sheath. It appears as multiple firm, large nodules and is highly invasive, sometimes forming ulcers.

• Occult sarcoid – typically found around the mouth, eyes, neck, or inner limbs. It is easily recognizable by its gray, flat, thick, and rough appearance, completely hairless. Occult sarcoids grow very slowly and may evolve into verrucous or fibroblastic forms.

• Mixed sarcoid – located on the lips, eyelids, chest, or inner thighs and may develop in various ways.

• Malignant sarcoid – it usually appears after trauma or injury on the elbows, knees, head, or inner thighs. Highly invasive and aggressive, it requires veterinary monitoring to avoid discomfort for the animal.

How to recognize sarcoids in horses ?

A diagnosis of sarcoids requires a clinical examination by a veterinarian. Sarcoids can easily be mistaken for warts, granulating wounds, or other skin conditions.

Studies show that sarcoids are more frequently observed in horses between one and seven years old. However, the presence of skin tumors in older animals suggests that caution remains necessary regarding this condition.

It is essential to confirm the diagnosis before starting any treatment, as inappropriate treatment may have adverse effects.

What treatments are available for sarcoids ?

Several treatments exist to remove one or more sarcoids, depending on their extent and the discomfort they cause.
