Giving Omega-3 and Omega-6 to Your Horse

Giving omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to your horse can provide many benefits for its health and overall well-being.

              Anti-inflammatory support

Omega-3 fatty acids have natural anti-inflammatory properties, which can be particularly beneficial for horses suffering from arthritis, tendonitis, or other inflammatory conditions. They help maintain joint flexibility and health, which is especially important for competition horses and senior horses.

              Immune system support

Omega-3 fatty acids help strengthen the immune system, enabling your horse to better resist disease and infection.

              Skin and coat health

They also contribute to healthy skin and a shiny coat, helping reduce dry skin issues and irritation. Omega-3s are especially helpful in managing summer dermatitis.

              Role of Omega-6 fatty acids

Omega-6 fatty acids play a role in regulating metabolism and are essential for the production of prostaglandins, which are involved in inflammatory responses. They are important for reproduction and hormonal balance, and essential for growth and development, particularly in young horses.

Importance of balance between Omega-3 and Omega-6

Maintaining a proper balance between omega-3 and omega-6 is essential. An excess of omega-6 compared to omega-3 may promote inflammation. A balanced ratio helps maximize the benefits of these essential fatty acids.

Why give omega fatty acids to your horse ?

Providing omega-3 and omega-6 helps support overall health, including joint function, immune response, brain function, and improves skin and coat quality. Choosing properly balanced sources is essential to ensure optimal nutrient intake.

Which oil should I give my horse ?

If your horse is sensitive to new supplements, choose Arbalou Linseed Oil. Its taste and smell are milder than Arbalou Omega Oil.

If your horse struggles to consume oil, start with a small amount in a syringe and administer it directly into the mouth. The horse will usually adapt within a few days.

Most horses readily accept Arbalou Omega Oil. If your horse already accepts spirulina, this is a good sign, as it will likely tolerate the marine taste well. Its taste and smell are stronger than linseed oil. If needed, it can also be administered by syringe or introduced gradually mixed with carrots or apples.

At Arbalou Soins, we do not use seeds (such as chia or flax seeds) for horses. The equine digestive system is not designed to properly digest whole seeds. This is why cold-press extraction is essential to guarantee oil quality, bioavailability, and optimal effectiveness.
